BSc in Applied Geosciences

GUtech offers a Bachelor of Science (BSc) program in Applied Geosciences. It is customised to the requirements of Oman and the wider region, building on the expertise of RWTH Aachen University in Germany. The Bachelor programme focuses on three areas of key importance to the region’s present and future: energy, water, and mineral georesources. In addition to providing a rigorous education with high standards, GUtech places strong emphasis on the future employability of its graduates. For this reason, many courses in the programme are presented in cooperation with local and international industry partners. Soft skills, such as communication, teamwork and presentation skills, are integrated throughout the curriculum. From their first day at GUtech students are encouraged to think critically and act responsibly, and our staff assists them in developing these competences accordingly.

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Geosciences at GUtech is an eight semester (four year) programme. The first three semesters introduce the fundamentals of the study programme in mathematics, natural sciences, which include physics and chemistry, and geosciences. The last five semesters focus on key areas of applied geosciences required for a solid grounding in this field of applied science, with an introduction to Petroleum Geosciences, Ore Geology, Economic Geology and Hydrogeology.

The programme is taught in English and includes written and oral tests, seminar papers and a Bachelor’s thesis. Students will also be expected to develop communication skills in German, as the programme requires travelling to Germany to complete coursework at RWTH Aachen University. The majority of the courses, including field-based training, are offered in Oman and are taught by GUtech faculty staff based in Muscat. In addition, there are visiting professors from RWTH Aachen University who teach special courses.
Although the GUtech staff is international, all courses are supervised by professors from RWTH Aachen University.

For courses requiring highly-specialised equipment, students travel to Germany to complete the courses at RWTH Aachen University, and this trip is included in the fees. The Bachelor of Science in Applied Geosciences at GUtech is customised to meet the requirements of Oman and the wider region, building on the expertise of RWTH Aachen University in Germany.

The aim of the programme is to graduate students with skills that allow a sustainable development of the Sultanate. In order to achieve this goal, GUtech’s Department of Applied Geosciences works in close cooperation with the Faculty of Georesources and Materials Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. The Faculty of Georesources and Materials Engineering at RWTH Aachen University cooperates closely with industry and research institutions to build and maintain its high reputation. A significant part of the Faculty‘s funding comes from the industry, and this reflects the high standard of its work in practical research. In the area of Geosciences, RWTH Aachen University has a leading position in Germany in the fields of Petroleum Geosciences and Water Geosciences. It is more important than ever before for students to receive a practical scientific education, which leads to the best career opportunities both within the Sultanate of Oman and internationally.
